Rebuilding Together is a non-profit, non-sectarian organization, created out of the recognition that each year too many homes are lost to decay and demolition because low-income homeowners cannot afford to maintain their residence. If needed repairs are not undertaken, these homes and the neighborhoods in which they are located will continue to deteriorate. Like communities across the country, the Roanoke Valley faces problems with its residential housing stock. Area housing studies indicate more than 1,000 families in the Roanoke area are living in substandard homes.
Formed in 1998, Rebuilding Together-Roanoke is an affiliate of the national organization based in Washington D.C. The mission of Rebuilding Together is to provide low income, elderly or disabled homeowners with the assistance required to maintain their homes. Our goal is to ensure the needy have a safe, warm and dry living environment at no cost to the homeowner. Currently 25 or more homes are repaired each year in the Roanoke Valley. Each Rebuilding Day, people throughout the region work together to build a better community. Whether you are a novice at scraping paint or you are a skilled crafts person, Rebuilding Together-Roanoke needs you. You can sponsor a house or make a donation of any amount to support this important work. Sponsors can be caring individuals or organizations such as banks, churches, utilities, media, realtors and corporations.
We use donated materials from local companies. Monetary commitments from businesses, civic organizations and individuals provide funds to purchase building materials. By matching material resources with hundreds of volunteers, Rebuilding Together-Roanoke can produce home repairs valued at 4 to 5 times the actual cost of materials.
While the logistics of repairing 25 or more homes is a year long process, most of the repairs are performed on Rebuilding Day, which is the last Saturday in April. This allows people to volunteer for one day per year to help a neighbor in need.
